Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department Safety Bulletins

There have been multiple cases where a door genie malfunction has caused property damage to apparatus. Door genie remote buttons, may become loose and lodge themselves under the cover.

Our Department has recently experienced several parking brake failures on the ambulances equipped with the air-style activated parking brake system. So far we have been fortunate that this has only resulted in property damage; however, the potential for much worse certainly exists.  Officers and drivers are asked to ensure that the parking brake system on these units is checked on a regular basis in accordance with General Order 2-17, Monthly Vehicle Inspection.

To conduct a parking brake check on the Freightliner ambulances:

1.)    Ensure parking brake is applied.

2.)    Place the wheel chock 6-8 inches in front of the tire, and clear the area in front of vehicle.

3.)    Place the vehicle in drive.

4.)    Remove foot from brake pedal and GENTLY tap on the accelerator (no more than 300 rpms, as this may cause damage to the drive train).

5.)    The unit should not move.

If there is movement when conducting the above test, the unit should be placed out of service and Apparatus Maintenance contacted.  In addition, if there is suspicion of brake failure of any type, during normal operations, place the unit out of service and chock the wheels on both sides until thoroughly inspected by a mechanic.
